Often overshadowed by the more frequented Cape Town and Kruger National Park, iSimangaliso Wetland Park stands as one of South Africa’s most pristine and ecologically diverse treasures. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it encompasses a vast array of ecosystems—from lush coastal forests and expansive wetlands to serene lakes and vibrant coral reefs. This remarkable diversity supports over 6,500 plant and animal species, including 521 bird species, many of which are rare or endemic to the region. This is one of our favourite areas in South Africa, our highlights includes:
- Kosi Bay: A tranquil haven of interconnected lakes, palm-fringed beaches, and mangrove swamps. This area is renowned for its traditional Tsonga fish traps, which have been used for over 700 years, and serves as a vital nesting ground for the endangered leatherback and loggerhead turtles from October to February
- St Lucia: Situated at the mouth of the St Lucia Estuary, this charming town is one of the few places where hippos roam freely through the streets at night. Visitors can embark on boat cruises to observe hippos, crocodiles, and a myriad of bird species in their natural habitat
- Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve: As the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa, this reserve is renowned for its conservation efforts, particularly in saving the white rhino from extinction. It offers an authentic Big 5 safari experience amidst diverse landscapes
- Phinda and Pongola Game Reserves: These private reserves offer exclusive safari experiences, with Phinda being known for its diverse habitats and Pongola for its rich birdlife and scenic beauty.
